I’m delighted to report that I will be appearing at The Dionysium in Austin, Texas, for the Ethics show on April 3. My talk will be titled “Letting Animals In.” The tentative description is below:
Not so very long ago, animals were left out in the cold by philosophers. They were thought of as not just lesser, but wholly different, and so unworthy of consideration, either moral or intellectual. Today it is nearly a given that an ethicist will take animals seriously, one way or another. I will talk about this change in philosophers’ attitudes toward animals and describe a few of the common approaches to animal ethics.
